Vascular Patterns of the Femur of Dogs Following Intertrochanteric Osteotomy

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to report the effect of osteotomy on the vascularization of the femur in dogs.
Using a micropaque injection technique the vascular pattern in the proximal femur of mongrel dogs was studied by means of roentgenograms.
The right femora of these animals were then osteotomized at the inter-trochanteric level, and an internal fixation with a plate and screws performed.
The other femur was then exposed, and an identical plate and screws inserted without osteotomy, using this side as a control.
Eight to twelve weeks after this procedure, all plates and screws were removed, and roentgenograms were made. There was satisfactory bony union across the osteotomized area in all of the cases. In two of these exprerimental animals a mild coxa vara deformity of the right femur developed.
Changes in the vascular pattern were as follows:
1. Interruption of branches of ascending nutrient arteries of the right femur (experimental side) at the osteotomized area.
2. Dilatation and increased vascularization of the trochanteric branches and inferior metaphyseal arteries on the side of osteotomy in comparison with the control femur.
3. No remarkable changes were noted in the lateral epiphyseal artery, artery in the ligamentum teres, or nutrient artery of the innominate bones.
